Otis is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 543 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.8 square miles (75 km2), of which, 24.9 square miles (64 km2) of it is land and 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2) of it (13.34%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 543 people, 229 households, and 160 families residing in the town. The population density was 21.8 people per square mile (8.4/km²). There were 678 housing units at an average density of 27.2 per square mile (10.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.90% White, 0.37% Native American, and 0.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.18% of the population.

There were 229 households out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.81.

In the town the population was spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 30.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 114.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.9 males.
